St Basil’s Home for the Aged, Victoria put on notice to improve - Statement from Ms Janet Anderson PSM, Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner

22 January 2021

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission has imposed strict accreditation conditions on St Basil’s Home for the Aged, Victoria, which require it to rectify within 12 months those areas where it is non-compliant with Aged Care Quality Standards.

The Commission undertook a comprehensive review audit and multiple assessment contacts over the past month at St Basil’s, which informed this accreditation decision.

The Commission has been closely monitoring the quality and care of services at St Basil’s, and especially since the COVID-19 outbreak at the service in July 2020.

The Commission initially took regulatory action on 26 July in relation to St Basil’s following concerns about the serious impact of the outbreak on the residents and staff. Further regulatory action was imposed on 24 December 2020 which required the provider to immediately take action to manage risks associated with identified non-compliance with the Quality Standards.

Commissioner Ms Janet Anderson PSM said: “A 12-month period of accreditation, instead of the normal three years, will require the provider to work hard and with the necessary sense of urgency to rectify areas where it is non-compliant, to ensure that residents at the service receive quality care and services.

“The Commission will continue to closely monitor the provider during the 12-month period of accreditation to help ensure that the service is driving the continuous improvement required in the safety and quality of its services.”

St Basil’s was found not to comply with 20 of 42 requirements of the Aged Care Quality Standards in January 2021.

St Basil’s has acknowledged the identified deficiencies and has confirmed that it is paying close attention to addressing these issues.

The provider’s accreditation is now due to expire on 19 January 2022.
